ICT Awareness Workshop for Journalists

Journalists in Tanzania have been urged to utilize internet services through mobile telephone provided by TIGO through their GPRS services.

Addressing journalists on the ICT awareness workshop, held at Nyakahoja hostel on 10 October 2006, Casto Rwegoshora, a marketing officer from MIC Ltd operating mobile telecommunication, through the brand name of TIGO, said journalists could file their stories from anywhere through their mobile phone, if they are subscribed to TIGO.

I He said through TIGO they could send sound and pictures to their media outlets, even if, they were in remote areas, provided they had handsets compatible with GPRS services, and they were in areas where TIGO was accessible.

Earlier on, Acting Mwanza Regional Commissioner Peter Madaha, praised TIGO for providing mobile telecommunication even to remote rural areas. He said such services could catalyze development in those areas, if properly utilized.

SWOPnet Chairperson, Abubakar Karsan, called upon various ICT stakeholders to promote rural development through Information and Communication Technology. In promoting ICT awareness, SWOPnet Lake Zone Chapter, said Karsan would organize a beauty contest under the name of Miss ICT and establish an ICT Award for journalists.

In the forum journalists were exposed to a practical session on various services provide provided TIGO. They also asked some questions for further clarification. The forum was attended by 35 journalist from Mwanza region.
